Murder to Measure Mystery Historical Plots


Tale as old as time...

Murder has occurred throughout history, and many of our plots are explicitly set during a particular period or can be adapted to be so. This gives great scope for guests to dress up and get into role. Here are some stories that are set during some of the periods popular with party-goers.

Clothes/costumes are realtively easy to come by for most stories set in the modern day, but for period pieces, it may be necessary to hire something appropriate. WE have some advice on how to dress the part on our costumes page.

Edwardian

It is 1910 and the celebrated archaeologist, Sir Digby Hand, is leading an expedition up the Nile to explore a recently discovered ancient tomb. The legends of a curse are strengthened by a number of accidents, or is something less supernatural responsible? Will our intrepid heroes escape the curse and realize their wildest dreams?


1920s

This and the 1930s is the period which many people think of when wanting to hold a mystery party. Often guests will want to dress as flappers and gangsters, so we have stories that cater to this, but we also have stories set in Britain in the inter-war years, where dress may be more formal and conservative.

1920s A Valentine's Day Mascara

Set in 1920's Chicago, a night of gangsters and other shady characters investigating the murder of Al Kaseltzer at his speakeasy, the Rumbling Tum.


1920s Murdered By The Mob

Set during the prohibition in Chicago, the murder of a notorious gangster leads to further tension and accusations.

Lord Matthew, "Matt", Black has been found murdered in his stately home. Unfortunately the fastidious cleaning by housekeeper Mrs White has made it very difficult to determine the means or location of his death. Can the colourful collection of characters assembled to mark his passing crack the case before anyone else falls victim to the curse of the estate.

World War II

WWII Die For Victory

In 1942 the surprise return of Oliver 'Odd' Binns from his top secret job causes consternation on the home front and trouble at the PoW camp.

It is 1944 and in a sleepy French village the residents are celebrating the impending arrival of the Allies to liberate them from Nazi oppression. The resistance is trying to help the invasion, but a local café owner just wants a peaceful life and could do without the demands from the resistance - and his wife.


1960s

1960s Bad Beehive-iour

In 1960s Baltimore, a school prom may lead to TV stardom for the best dancer. With such high stakes, jealousies are intense.


60s Magical Murdery Tour

A reunion of two 1960s pop bands is planned, but it soon becomes apparent that it was more than creative differences that drove the bands apart.


Tudor

elizabethan Tudor Manor Died

During the reign of Elizabeth I, Sir Jekyll Spirit offers patronage to a young explorer and marks her imminent sailing to the New World with a specially commissioned play. In a period of political intrigue, religious tensions and international conflicts, not everyone agrees with Sir Jekyll's motives.


1980s

The time of New Romantics, fuzzy computer graphics and Margaret Thatcher is a popular period for parties, particularly with hens. Get out your neon clothes and puffball skirt and join the fun.

1980s Wham Bam

The drinks are free at Club Tropicana, but the arrival of a famous band puts owner Steve Odds all in a tizzy. All that's missing is the sea!


goonies The Zoomies: Curse of Red Eye's Ruby

Twenty years ago, a gang of teenagers discovered a cache of pirate treasure, but were unable to make use of it. Many of the group still obsesss about their lost fortune, and when one of them disappears on the hunt for a fabled Ruby, they head out to relive their youthful adventures.


1970s

70s Haywire Hotel

Service at a rundown 1970s hotel is not up to much, but would one of the eccentric guests or staff resort to murder? Just don't mention the war!


1930s

Many people think of the 1930s as the heyday of murder mysteries - maybe Agatha Christie or Dorothy L Sayers have something to do with it. Most 1920s stories would work in the 1930s and vice versa.
